From couch potato to optimal health after 55
I’ve spent most of my adult life being very comfortable as a couch potato. I watched from the sidelines while other people accomplished their dreams. I’ve happily supported my husband from the sidelines while he traveled to various countries, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, and ran the London Marathon. But there came a time when I became discontent in my place on the sidelines. I wanted more out of life. I was tired of making decisions based on my size and weight, not feeling confident in how I looked or felt physically.
I had struggled with being overweight for many years, trying this diet or that diet, attempting to lose weight yet failing miserably. I was taking high blood pressure medicine, high cholesterol medicine, and rheumatoid arthritis medications. I realized that if I did not do something drastically different, I would continue to get the same results--more weight gain and perhaps even more medications, leaving me unable to fully participate in life. I was getting old before my time because I was abusing my body with food. I became very dissatisfied with my life and desperately wanted it to be different.
I started making small changes like walking regularly and making better food choices. I even started running but I still struggled with losing weight. As a menopausal woman in her mid 50’s, I wondered if I could ever get a handle on this weight problem. I was close to giving up, feeling hopeless after so many disappointments.
Then I heard about a program with structure, accountability, habit building, community, and coaching and a spark of hope was renewed in my heart. Could it be? Could this be the plan that actually worked for me? Hope is a powerful thing. When we have hope, we can believe in our future. Without hope, it’s impossible to see it or even dream about it.
I took a chance on myself and started the program 5 months ago. I have lost 32 pounds and 25 inches so far but I have gained so much more. I have become a runner which is something I wanted to do for years but struggled to make it happen. What I have come to understand is that running is much easier and more enjoyable when you weigh less. Did you know that for every pound of fat you lose, it is 4 fewer pounds of pressure on your joints?! So losing 32 pounds has relieved my joints of 128 pounds of unnecessary pressure!! I now run 6 days a week and truly enjoy it.
I have installed healthy habits in my life that are helping me achieve optimal health. Habits like getting plenty of water every day, eating the right nutrition at the right times, and in the proper portions, going to bed earlier so I am sure to get enough sleep and getting regular, consistent exercise each day.
One of the most powerful things I gained was the discovery of the power of my mind and its connection to my actions. This was the missing link between my current success and the failures of my past. With the right mindset we can truly be free from all the “weight” we carry.
It sounds funny to talk about gaining when on a weight loss program, but I have gained confidence in myself, I like the way I look in pictures now and I love finding clothes in my closet that fit again, clothes I haven’t been able to wear for years.
Health, like life, is a journey. In health, we are either declining, stagnating, or moving toward optimal health.
