Dream a New Dream
Do you ever find yourself stuck in a rut? You wake up & get ready for work. Get your coffee and grab n go breakfast (if you even eat breakfast). Then work all day, trudging through the same old tasks and feelings of discontent and boredom. It’s hard to get excited about that kind of life, right? I mean that’s got dull and boring written all over it. Who wants that kind of life? And yet, we can easily find ourselves living it. Why is that? How does that happen? It’s certainly not what we intended when we started adulting. But oftentimes, what we thought would happen and what happens are two very different things.
Life doesn’t always work out like we dreamed it would. Most of the time, it doesn’t turn out like the fairytale we had in our head. How many of us dreamt of white picket fences and a yard filled with beautiful, fragrant flowers, yet we live in an apartment with noisy neighbors? Maybe you dreamed of being married at 22 and having 2.5 kids by 30, but at 28 you wondered if you would ever get married, then struggled with infertility. Disney has taught us to look for our one true love and when we find him we will know because our hearts will tell us and there will be little birds singing and fireworks going off in the sky. Then reality sets in and we realize that our Prince Charming snores or doesn’t put the toilet seat down.
Real life hardly ever works out the way we see it in our heads. So what do we do with that? What are we supposed to do? More importantly, what can we do? Many people believe they have little or no control over their destiny. That somehow it just happens to them.
Sometimes, we find ourselves in circumstances beyond our control. However, more often than not, they are caused by our own choices. So if our circumstances are based on our choices, we have control over them. I believe we have control over our destiny because it is largely determined by our choices.
What are you choosing today? Think about your choices and circumstances. Are you making wise choices that are congruent with who you are and/or who you want to be? Or are you just letting life happen and going with the flow?
I am no longer satisfied with letting life just happen to me. I have made significant changes in my thinking, my habits, my dreams, and goals, that are taking me to new heights of excitement and fulfillment. These are feelings I was not experiencing a couple of years ago.
Something I have grabbed onto as a sort of mantra for this stage of my life is something C.S. Lewis said many years ago. “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”
What are your goals and dreams? If it has been a while since you even thought about that question, I encourage you to take a few minutes and think about it. Then write them down. There is something powerful about actually writing them down. Then pick one and start working toward achieving it, one step at a time. You will be glad you did. Growth begins with awareness, but it is realized in action. Take action to achieve your dreams.
